Tantimber, a global manufacturer of ThermoWood products, released an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), which details the results of an intensive life cycle assessment (LCA) conducted by Imnera Sustainability Consulting. The LCA study shows the environmental impacts of the company’s Thermowood manufacturing process and other life cycle stages.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an internationally standardized methodology (ISO 14040) that helps quantify the environmental impacts related to goods and services. The LCA considers the cradle-to-gate and through-to-the-end-of-life, or grave, assessment.

The cradle-to-grave measurement of the Tantimber Thermowood assessment included kiln-dried timber receiving, stacking, Thermowood treatment, profiling and finishing, use, disposal, and benefits beyond the grave stages. Tantimber’s cradle-to-gate greenhouse gases were rated at a negative result of -653 kilograms of COeq. per cubic meter due to the product’s biogenic carbon content. Additionally, cradle-to-grave greenhouse gas emissions were calculated as 377 kg CO2 eq per cubic meter.

“We are pleased with the independent assessment of Tantimber Thermowood manufacturing process,” said Yakup Kayatas, CEO of Tantimber. “Our building professional partners have the added benefit of stocking, selling, building, and specifying proven sustainable, low environmental impact wood products with confidence.”
