UnderDeck Solutions officially launched its modular under-deck ceiling and drainage system, UnderDeck Shield, across North America in early April 2026. UnderDeck Shield is now available direct-to-consumer through e-commerce and via a network of building products distributors and retail stores.

Addressing a Persistent Gap in the Category

Existing under-deck systems typically fall into two categories: high-cost, contractor-installed systems or improvised DIY solutions. Membrane-based systems and extruded aluminum systems, while effective, often require installation during initial deck construction and can be labor-intensive and visually unappealing in exposed applications. “Most of what’s out there technically works, but nobody really loves it,” said Jim Denn, founder, inventor, and CEO of UnderDeck Shield. “It’s expensive, it’s difficult to install, and in a lot of cases, it just doesn’t look very good. Even before we had a finished product, we were confident that we had come up with a better solution.”

System Overview

UnderDeck Shield is a panel-based system composed of overlapping composite panels that install either beneath existing deck joists or above joists in new construction. The system channels water away from the deck structure while creating a finished ceiling below.

 Key attributes include:

• Compatibility with both existing and new construction applications, ground level or multi-story

• Can be installed below joists or above

• Designed for decks with joists spaced 16” on center

• Lightweight composite construction, panels weigh about 3 pounds

• Provides a finished ceiling aesthetic on second-story decks

Installation and Job Site Efficiency

The system is engineered to reduce installation complexity and labor time relative to current underdeck ceiling systems. Its modular design allows for faster installs and greater flexibility across varied job site conditions, including elevated and ground-level decks. At an estimated material retail cost of approximately $15 per sq. ft., UnderDeck Shield is positioned as an affordable upgrade that enables contractors and homeowners to add usable square footage and project value without significantly increasing labor burden. “Pros get it right away,” said Mitch Cook, president & COO. “They see how it installs, how it looks, and what it opens up in terms of usable space, added value, and upsell.”

Industry Experience and Channel Development

Industry veteran Mike Kunard of Hidden Step Marketing has been an early contributor to the UnderDeck Shield team, helping shape the go-to-market strategy and connecting the company with key channel partners.

As UnderDeck Shield’s Vice President of Distribution Partnerships, Kunard brings nearly three decades of experience in the building materials industry, where he focused on category development, product innovation, and distribution strategy.“After years in the outdoor living industry, it wasn’t hard to see the merit in this product,” said Kunard. “It addresses a real gap and does it in a way that creates opportunity for both contractors and channel partners.”

Development Timeline and Market Response

The product was developed in just over a year, originating from a prototype created by Denn. “This started with a common problem, and a thought that there must be a better way to do this than what’s on the market. The idea clicked, but what’s happened since is the real story. The team grabbed it and turned it into something real, fast.” Cook added, “It’s been a whirlwind. The pace has been driven by a strong early response from contractors and building professionals.”

UnderDeck Shield officially launched in the U.S. in early April 2026. Customers can purchase the system through the company’s website at underdeckshield.com and Underdeck Shield is actively adding national distribution partners where the product can be easily purchased through lumberyard and retail stores. The initial product release features a clean white shiplap design, with additional colors and profiles already in development.
