Ignition-Resistant ThermoWood Debuts in North America
BPWood, in partnership with SaferWood Thermex-FR, has announced its ThermoWood Ayous and ThermoWood Nordic Pine successfully passed independent third-party testing to achieve Class A ignition-resistant status per ASTM E2768 (E84 30-minutes) after ASTM D2898 accelerated weathering; the first available in North America.
BPWood supplies ThermoWood to North America in partnership with LDCwood, a member of the International ThermoWood Association.
SaferWood with Thermex-FR by Chemco, Inc., is a one-time permanent fire-retardant pressure treatment to all surfaces as required by IBC 2303.2, which renders natural and thermally modified wood ignition-resistant. Approved for exterior use, per IWUIC 503.2, in residential and commercial design and construction, in all WUI designated and FHSV zones.
BPWood’s ThermoWood Ayous and ThermoWood Nordic Pine with SaferWood Thermex-FR are ignition-resistant, appearance grade, exterior FRTW code compliant alternatives to non-combustible materials.
“Our goal was to prove our fire-retardant technology, created in 1981, could be applied to contemporary materials and we accomplished that goal,” said J. Travis Owens, chief business development officer at SaferWood. “BPWood's products were subjected to the same rigorous independent third-party laboratory ASTM testing as other species and performed exceptionally well. We are pleased to add ThermoWood Ayous and ThermoWood Nordic Pine to our ICC ESR-1159 and QAI CERus-1031 reports.”
“The mix of sustainable species, proven ThermoWood modification, strong appearance, and Class A ignition-resistance makes this a standout for cladding and decking,” said Chris Bouchard, sales lead at BPWood.
BPWood has positioned supply to meet demand through its partnership with SaferWood, with profile samples and listing reports (ICC ESR-1159 and QAI CERus-1031) available upon request.
These developments open a new path for builders, designers, and distributors by making ThermoWood Ayous and Nordic Pine available with code-compliant options for interior and select exterior applications, subject to local requirements and project specifications. Profiles are offered for cladding, decking, rainscreen, and soffit projects, with options including square edge, tongue-and-groove, and rainscreen patterns.
With these results, BPWood becomes the exclusive North American source for fire-rated ThermoWood Ayous and ThermoWood Nordic Pine, strengthening its leadership in sustainable, high-performance wood solutions.
